Welcome > Local Info > History ...

The story of this coastal area goes back as far as 10,000 years ago when this area was occupied by Native Americans. The indians were drawn to this area because of tis rich natural resources, its navigable waters, and for their love of seafood.

In 1170, however, the Europeans began their trek to the New World and discovered the Eastern Shore area along the way. The legend goes that a Welsh explorer named Madoc Ab Owain Gwnedd made his way to these shores. This according to a plaque that can be found at Fort Morgan, placed there by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Recorded history states that the Spanish were the first to arrive in the early sixteenth century. Their explorations were driven by the desire of European nations to find undiscovered treasures. The French followed having the greatest impact. They established the settlement of Bon Secour and brought with them the first azaleas to be planted in the area. The British gained control as a result of the French and Indian Wars. The Spanish re-established their presence here but lost it again to the British as a result of the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. Four years later, the 14th British Colony, Alabama, at last joined the original thirteen American colonies.

The area was a pivotal one during the Civil War. It was controlled by the Confederates with Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay and the busy port city which was a center of transportation and trade. The last battle of the war between the states was fought between Spanish Fort and Blakeley and actually took place days after General Robert E. Lee had already surrendered in Virginia.

After this tumultuous history, the future was a bright one based on diversity and neighborly ideals. Greeks, Italians, Germans, Russians and Swedes have since helped contribute to the richness of this area's history. Thus combining for a virtual melting pot of cultures, traditions, and industries.

Today, Baldwin County is one of fasting growing in the state of Alabama. People are drawn to this area not only for the strong economy and the abundant natural resources, but also because of the friendly people and beautiful community.

Real Estate Tips
Selling Your Home >Keeping Your House Safe

Home safety precautions are always important, but it is especially important to make your home "accident-proof" while it is on the market. Many strangers will be coming through your home who won't be aware of the minor hazards that you and your family instinctively avoid.

Go through your home with an eye for potential hazards. Remove the obstacles that you can and post "watch your head" or "watch your step" signs where they are needed. Look for loose banisters, uneven steps, precariously placed plants, art objects or anything else that could fall on someone, wet spots on bath or kitchen floors, toys that someone might fall over and anything that you have to step over or duck under. Make sure that rugs will not slip, especially those at the bottom of stairs. There aren't many things that will more quickly dampen a buyer's enthusiasm for a house than a bump on the head or an unexpected trip down a flight of stairs.
